The United States has called on the Maldivian government to take action against those responsible for human rights violations, highlighted in the reports on the change of government.
US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake made this statement at a press conference held today, as part of his current visit to Maldives.
When asked about the United States’ views on the implementation of the recommendations in the reports, Blake said that the US takes human rights violations very seriously, and urged the government to investigate those allegations in a credible manner, and take clear and visible disciplinary action if evidence of wrongdoing is found.
Reports released by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) and Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) allege Police of having violated human rights on 6, 7 and 8 February, and recommends that these actions be investigated.
However no action has been taken so far, and it has been said that these matters are currently under investigation by Police Integrity Commission (PIC).
Blake extended support to strengthen the Police and MNDF Institutions, and assured that importance will be given to protection of human rights during trainings provided by the US.
He stressed the importance of continuing the Leaders’ Dialogue discussions, and said that the talks should continue at the Parliament despite the Moderator’s resignation.
Blake also said that the US will continue to assist in strengthening and expanding institutions necessary for promoting democracy in the Maldives, such as the PIC and the HRCM.
