Parliament has given the green light to appoint Mahzoom Saleem from Shabnamge, K. Kaashidhoo to the vacant seat on the board of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
Only two names were sent to the Parliament for the vacant seat. Apart from Mahzoom, Ismail Sajid from Ma. Vilaarodhi was sent to the Parliament. The President had preferred Mahzoom to Sajid and the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament also stuck to the order that the President decided.
Mahzoom, who is an attorney, was approved to the seat on the board unanimously by all MPs present.
The taxation laws of the currently recently underwent some changes.
Now, the board of MIRA is comprised of seven members. They include an appointee made by the Minister in charge of the finance as well as five members appointed by the President with the approval of the Parliament and the Commissioner-General of Taxation.
Previously, the board included the Commissioner General of Taxation and the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation in addition to the five members appointed by the President with the approval of the Parliament.
