Former President Mohamed Nasheed and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the multi-party system paved the way for a people’s government.
The former President was conveying his best wishes on the Republic day being celebrated in the country today with a tweet when he emphasized that the most important aspect of a republic was that it was governed by the people.
“The age-old governing method in the Maldives was transformed to a government of the people with the introduction of the multi-party system.” said the former President who won the first multi-party election in the country.
The third President of the second republic noted that a multi-party system was integral to maintaining a republic. Former President Nasheed was sworn in as President on November 11, 2008, after beating former President Maumoon who had ruled the country for 30 years in a tightly contested election.
The multi-party system was first introduced to the Maldives in 2005 and the country currently has nine political parties after 14 years. Three presidential elections have taken place since the induction of the system.
