Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that all the members of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) in Ha. Maarandhoo have joined PPM.
A PPM delegation inclusive of its Parliament Members is currently visiting Haa Alif Atoll.
PPM Spokesperson and Galolhu Dhekunu MP Ahmed Mahloof said today that the purpose of this trip is to understand the condition of the people of Haa Alif Atoll, and to gain support for PPM.
He did not indicate how many DRP members of Maarandhoo joined PPM yesterday.
Majority in Maarandhoo is held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MDP member and Maarandhoo Council member Mohamed Hameed has also confirmed that a group of DRP members of Maarandhoo joined PPM yesterday.
However, DRP Council Member and Thulusdhoo MP Rozaina Adam said today that she had not received any information about DRP members in Maarandhoo having joined PPM.
“Our registry does not show such big changes. It’s possible, that they join PPM today and JP tomorrow. The validity of such information can only be confirmed after we receive the information from the Elections Commission,” Rozaina said.
Numbers publicized by Elections Commission on 12 August show that members of all parties except PPM had decreased.
Currently, the three largest parties are PPM with 17,298 members due to 774 additional members; MDP with 48,466 members due to a reduction of 139 members; and DRP with 27,181 members due to a reduction 341 members.
