Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar has submitted a resolution to the Parliament which calls on making lifejackets compulsory for passenger vessels, and sea transport restricted to journeys for purposes which are absolutely necessary and unavoidable when a yellow alert weather advisory is in effect.
Adam Shareef says his resolution is aimed drawing attention to safety precaution in order to avoid tragic marine accidents in Maldives.
He noted the loss of lives and property which have resulted in marine accidents due to lack of adherence of safety standards, and weather advisories issued by State agencies.
He especially noted the marine accident which took place off the coast of H. Dh. Hanimaadhoo on Thursday, August 29, which resulted in the loss of five lives including three women and one child.
None of the passengers on board the small speedboat had been wearing lifejackets, and the journey was made while a yellow alert had been in effect in the area.
Adam Shareef has urged seafarers to prioritize the safety first policy.
