Indian Independence Day celebrated in Maldives

Indian Embassy in Maldives hosted a function in Male’ City this Thursday to celebrate India’s 72nd Independence Day.

The function, held at the Indian Embassy headquarters this Thursday morning, was attended by a large number of Indian citizens who reside in Maldives.

The function began with the hoisting of the Indian national flag by Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir. It was followed by the Indian national anthem, and the reading of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address to the Indian people.

Ambassador Sudhir focused his speech on India’s journey to becoming one of the top five global economic leaders since it gained its independence from Britain 72 years ago.

He said that India, in addition to being a global economic power, was a key contributor to the development of neighboring countries including Maldives.

He also highlighted on the reinforcement of bilateral ties between Maldives and India with the visit by PM Modi to Maldives and Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to India.

Ambassador Sudhir thanked Maldives for its age-old friendship with India, and urged Indian citizens who reside and work in Maldives to contribute to the development and prosperity of Maldives.

India gained its independence from British rule on August 15, 1947.
