Environment and Climate Change Committee of the Parliament has made the decision to ban the use of plastic water bottles at any parliamentary meeting.

Chairperson of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem confirmed to ‘Sun’ that the committee has passed the decision to advise the Speaker of the Parliament to impose the ban.

Saleem noted the decision was made with the unanimous consensus of all committee members.

He said that the committee has advised both the Speaker and the Chairperson of the General Committee to impose the ban.

Several government ministries, public schools, and State companies have imposed a ban on plastic water bottles since the campaign to ban single-use plastics was launched by the President’s Office in early 2019.
