I did not hit a police officer: Amin Faisal

Amin Faisal, Defense Minister, and later National Security Advisor, during the presidency of MDP-leader Mohamed Nasheed, has refused an allegation against him claiming that he committed battery against a police officer.

Amin was summoned by the police last night for questioning. He attended the Maldives Police Service headquarters at Shaheed Hussain Adam Building at 9 o’clock.

Speaking to Sun today, Amin said that he was questioned by the Police about an alleged incident on the 28th of last August. He said that the accusation against him was that he hit a police officer during an MDP protest that night, near the Traders’ Hotel in Henveiru, Malé. Amin said that “it was a completely baseless allegation” and that he had given a statement to that effect in answer to police questioning.

The summon sent to Amin by the Police stated that he was being summoned to question him due to an alleged case of battery.

“I am accused of hitting a policeman during the protest held that night. However, I told them that I had never hit anyone, and that it was a baseless accusation alleging me to have done something that I actually did not do”, said Amin.

A police media official confirmed today that Amin Faisal was summoned today to be questioned with regards to an ongoing investigation and that he had given a statement to the police. However, the official did not give any further detail.
