Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of winds of up to 50 mph during the heavy rains of the Hulhangu Monsoon currently affecting the country.

The agency forecasts scattered rain across the country with a few heavy showers in the northern atolls over the next 24 hours.

Surface winds will vary between south to south-westerly at 8 – 18 miles per hour in southern atolls and at 15 – 25 miles per hour in northern and central atolls.

Winds may gust 45- 50 miles per hour during showers, warns the agency.

Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts the string winds and rough seas may produce tidal swells of 3-6 feet, and has warned northern and central atolls to take preventive measures against flooding.

The agency has also advised seafarers to take necessary precautions against the strong winds and rough seas.
