20-year-old hospitalized after failed overtaking attempt over Hulhumale’ Highway

A 20-year-old man has sustained injuries after crashing into traffic on the Hulhumale’ Highway in an illegal overtaking attempt this Wednesday.

Maldives Police Service says the traffic collision was reported to the agency at 9:15 am.

The 20-year-old motorcyclist was travelling from Hulhumale’ to Male’ City and hit a car just as he switched to the four-wheeled vehicle lane in an attempt to overtake other vehicles. Maldives Police Service reports the motorcycle had skidded to a distance of 116 feet before it crashed into another motorcycle.

Both the driver and the passenger on the second motorcycle sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old motorcyclist is reported to have sustained “scrapes and varying degrees of other injuries” and is currently being treated at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ City.

Maldives Police Service reports the 20-year-old does not possess driver’s license, and that his motorcycle has been seized by the agency.

Statistics published on the Maldives Police Service’s website show 964 roadside accidents have taken place in Maldives so far this year; the count for the current month alone stands at 102 accidents.
