19-year-old injured in a hit-and-run in Male’ City

A 19-year-old man has been hospitalized with injuries following a hit-and-run at the crossroads of Ameenee Magu and Sitththimaavaa Hingun in Male’ City in the early hours of this Sunday.

Maldives Police Service reports the accident took place at approximately 2:20 am when two speeding motorcycles collided with each other.

The agency reports that one of the motorcyclists, identified as a 19-year-old man, sustained a broken shoulder bone, a broken cheekbone, scrapes and bruises on his face, as well as other injuries.

He is being treated for his injuries at the ER of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The hospital has declined to make a comment regarding his condition until it receives his test results.

Maldives Police Service reports the other motorcyclist involved in the collision had fled the scene on his motorcycle.

The number of accidents due to reckless driving has increased sharply over the last couple of months; some of them resulting in critical injuries and even fatalities.

MPS has warned it will investigate cases of reckless driving which results in fatalities or critical injuries for criminal prosecution.
