MTCC cleans Feeali in an effort to control dengue outbreak

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has conducted a cleanup of the F. Feeali waste disposal area in an effort to control the dengue outbreak which has affected dozens of children on the island.

The cleanup was carried out last Monday.

MTCC reports it took the initiative at the interest of public health and safety.

The company reports it cleared 15 tons of waste (six trucks of waste) during its cleanup operation.

The waste has now been transported to Thilafushi and handed over to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) for safe disposal.

Dengue fever is transmitted by bite from Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes breed both inside and outside homes in artificial containers that hold stagnant water such as tin cans, buckets, discarded tires and other such items.

Cleaning up mosquito breeding grounds is therefore essential to controlling the spread of dengue fever.
