Parliament gives go-ahead for appointment of 3 ambassadors

The Parliament, this Tuesday, gave its approval for appointment of three foreign ambassadors nominated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The approval was given to:

  • Mohamed Khaleel, as Maldivian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia
  • Mohamed Jinah, as Maldivian Ambassador to Thailand
  • Aishath Azeema, as Maldivian Ambassador to China

The three gained arrival with the unanimous vote of all 36 lawmakers who took part in the voting this Tuesday afternoon.

The National Security Committee of the Parliament had originally refused to back Khaleel and Jinah, but later revised its decision.

Of the three diplomats, Khaleel had previously served as Maldivian Ambassador to Singapore and as a board member of several State-owned companies.

Jinah had previously served at the Ministry of Public Works, as Managing Director of Green Paradise Group which he owns, and at managerial posts at several other private companies.

Azeema previously served as First Secretary at Maldivian Embassy in India, and in additional posts at both Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance.

They will join the eight foreign ambassadors nominated by Solih who were given approval by the Parliament on December 12, 2018. They are:

  • Hassan Soabir Maldivian Ambassador to Belgium and the Permanent Representative of Maldives at the EU
  • Aishath Mohamed Didi, Maldivian Ambassador to India
  • Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, Maldivian Ambassador to Singapore
  • Ahmed Latheef (Seaweed Latheef), Maldivian Ambassador to Germany
  • Dr. Farhanaz Faisal, Maldivian Ambassador to the UK
  • Thilmeeza Hussain, Permanent Representative of Maldives at the UN and Maldivian Ambassador to the US
  • Wisam Ali, Maldivian Ambassador to Malaysia
  • Umar Abdul Razzaq, Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka
