Names of 16 candidates for EC sent to committee for evaluation

The names of the 16 candidates who applied for the post of commission member at the Elections Commission has been sent to the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament for evaluation this Tuesday.

Application for EC was opened as commission member Ismail Habeeb is near the end of his five-year term at the commission.

The 16 names sent to the Parliament by the President’s Office includes Ismail Habeeb, who was applied for a second term at the commission.

The names are ranked based on the date of application submission.

Candidates who have applied for the post, in addition to Ismail Habeeb, includes Aishath Hafeeza – former member of the Board of Directors at Public Service Media (PSM), several legal attorneys and former employees of EC.

Candidates who apply for the EC will be evaluated by the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament, and selected via a vote taken during an open parliamentary sitting.

Any Maldivian citizen who is a Muslim and 25 year or above, who is not a government or private sector employee, or a political appointee is eligible to apply as a member of EC.
