Ministry of Education has announced changes to the multigrade system used in low-populations schools.
The changes were announced in a circular sent to public schools this Monday.
Ministry of Education announced the multigrade system will be applicable only to two grades which falls into one key stage of education, and only if the number of students at each of the two grades fall short of 5 students, or if the total number students from the two grades combined fall short of 10 students.
“We advise you to discuss with this division and find a resolution before implementing these changes if you have any concerns or challenges to implementing these changes,” wrote the Ministry of Education in its circular.
The multigrade system was introduced to the Maldivian schooling system in 2017, and is used if students at a particular grade in a public school falls short of 20 students.
Parents of school students of B. Kihaadhoo and A. Dh. Hangameedhoo held demonstrations to protest against the multigrade system in January.
