MMA announces final chance to retrieve money from BCCI accounts

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced the final opportunity to retrieve money from over 2,000 accounts at the bankrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI).

BCCI declared its bankruptcy 27 years ago.

MMA issued a press statement noting it has been releasing money from the bank accounts of members of the general public at the BCCI – Maldives since August 5, 1998.

2,079 people have not retrieved the money to date. And MMA has instructed the account owners – whose information is listed on the MMA website, to submit requests to retrieve the money by end of March.

The BBCI was founded in 1972 by Pakistani financier Agha Hasan Abedi. The Maldivian branch of BBCI was shut down in 1991.
