MPS: Crime rate in atolls highest in Addu City in 2018

Addu City is the single district with the highest crime rate recorded in 2018, says Maldives Police Service.

The MPS, this Tuesday, released the crime statistics for the year 2018 during a press conference at Iskandhar Koshi.

Speaking during the press conference, Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police, Izmiya Zahir announced the MPS received 14, 811 complaints in 2018.

The crime statistics for the year 2018 show 4,460 cases were submitted from the atolls. It also places Addu City, which has the highest population outside of Male’ City, with the highest crime rate.

843 cases were submitted to the MPS from Addu City, 87 cases more than 2017.

V. Atoll, M. Atoll, F. Atoll and Sh. Atoll had the lowest crime rates with less than 100 crime reports.

  • V. Atoll: 28 cases
  • F. Atoll: 60 cases
  • M. Atoll: 78 cases
  • Sh. Atoll: 88 cases

The four atolls enjoyed the lowest crime rates in 2017 as well.

  • N. Atoll: 177 cases
  • Lh. Atoll: 170 cases
  • B. Atoll: 155 cases
  • Th. Atoll: 155 cases
  • Dh. Atoll: 139 cases
  • H. A. Atoll: 134 cases
  • A. A. Atoll: 122 cases

The statistics show an increase in crime rates in H. A. Atoll, H. Dh. Atoll, Sh. Atoll, A. Dh. Atoll, M. Atoll, Dh. Atoll, Th. Atoll, G. A. Atoll and G. Dh. Atoll compared to 2017. And the crime rate in N. Atoll remained the same as 2017.
