A Shariah and law student of Kulliyyathul Dhiraasaathul Islamiyya, Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo Beach Villa, Mehenaz Hussein, has been warned by Kulliyya Dean, Dr. Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa, that if she tries to attend classes next year, with her face veiled, she would not be granted access. Due to this warning, Mehenaz had appealed to the Civil Court to request a court order, which says that no one can deny anyone from wearing the face veil, since it is both a religious and a constitutional right.
According to the information received to Sun, by Mehenaz’s course sponsor, Meenaz Law Firm, the appeal has been sent to the court on last Sunday, and it has been accepted by the Civil Court today.
According to the copy of the Appeal form, received to Sun, there is no regulation which denies any student from wearing the face veil. And the form has also highlighted that there is no such section whatever or so, in the Constitution of Maldives.
Since Kulliyya is not a part of the National University, nor does its dress code says anything against the face veil and also due to the fact that in the Constitution of Maldives there is no chapter where it says one cannot wear the face veil, there is no way that it could be denied, stated the appeal in the form.
The Appeal form also included that since Kulliyya is an Islamic Institution, the students are and should be obliged to dress in an Islamic manner as the Institutions dress code regulation 5.1 said, and also section 5.2 addresses to students to attend, all classes, meetings and all official gatherings dressed in proper Islamic attire.
The Appeal ended whist pinpointing the (a) of the 36th chapter, in the Constitution which clearly says that no one should be discriminated, and everyone should be given the right to education.
