Fisheries in Maldives is declining, says the President

President Mohamed Nasheed had stated that day by day, the fisheries in Maldives is at a declining state, and we are at a conjunction where there is no choice but to study and look out for further resources from the sea in order to serve our people.

Speaking at the ceremony held today afternoon, to sign-up the agreement between Masmeeru Investments and Ken’dhukulhudhoo Council to fertilize and grow sea cucumbers, in Noonu Ken’dhikulludhoo swamp, the President highlighted on the scope of effective fertilizing of sea-cucumbers on the tourism industry and how experts have always claimed that the industry would thrive under exporting sea-cucumbers.

The President also guaranteed the support of the government, in all areas needed, in such works of the local people. He also added that the government would always look out for the income, the benefits for the people, the development to the Nation and the cost of environmental safety, and to come up to a conclusion where the task is more beneficial before implementing any king of work. He said that likewise the fertilization of sea cucumbers would also be started after all of the above criteria’s are checked and under the guidance of environmental experts.

After his speech, the President himself, waded waist deep into the swamp, and collected sea-cucumbers. The President was accompanied by some Ministers, Parliament Members and also some State Ministers in collecting the sea-cucumbers.
