Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) has left PPM and resubmitted application to form new political party, People’s National Congress (PNC).
Elections Commission (EC) made the decision not to grant Adhurey permission to form PNC as he is already a member of another political party.
The Fonadhoo MP originally submitted the application to form PNC last Sunday while still a member of PPM.
But the EC rejected the application this Tuesday.
Spokesperson and member of EC, Ahmed Akram confirmed the decision to ‘Sun’ and said the law does not allow a member of a political party to apply to form a new political party as long as he or she remains a member of the previous political party.
And President of EC, Ahmed Shareef has confirmed Abdul Raheem submitted his letter to leave PPM last Monday. And has re-filed the application to form PNC this Tuesday.
“Abdul Raheem has now left PPM. And filed an application in the same party name as the last time at approximately 1:30 pm today,” said Shareef.
Shareef said the EC has not yet made a decision on granting permission to form PNC. And will make its decision next sometime between next Wednesday to next week.
The submission of the application comes after Leader of PPM and former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s confirmation he, along with several other members of PPM, are planning on forming a new political party, given the ongoing court case over disputed PPM leadership.
Speaking during a PPM event on December 18, Yameen said he was fed up with the uncertainty over PPM’s future, and that the only option to calm the nerves of his supporters within PPM was to form a new political party.
