8-year-old injured in construction accident passes away

A screen grab from video footage of the construction accident at Male' City on December 16, 2018 shows nine-year-old girl walking on the pavement moments before a sack of cement fell on top of her, resulting in massive injuries.

The eight-year-old girl who sustained massive injuries after a sack of cement from a construction site at the Maafannu district of Male’ City fell on top of her last Sunday, has passed away.

Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has confirmed to ‘Sun’ the girl passed away at noon this Monday.

The girl was in critical condition and hooked to a ventilator at the Intensive Care Unit when she passed away.

The girl is from a Bangladeshi family who live in F. Atoll where the mother works as a medical doctor. They were in Male’ City to make some visa arrangements.

The eight-year-old was walking on the pavement next to W Construction’s site, M. Nalahiya Manzil when a cement sack being hoisted from the fifth floor to the sixth floor of the building hit the side of the building and burst open – loosening the rope around it and throwing it down directly on top of the girl’s head.

Video footage of the incident shows the girl’s condition was first noticed by a construction worker nearby once the dust from the cement cleared. A second man is seen throwing the girl over his shoulders and rushing to get a vehicle to transport her to the hospital.

Male’ City Council has suspended W Construction’s license.
