A government lawmaker has submitted an amendment to the Import/Export Act to cut import duty on diesel.

The Bill was submitted to the Parliament this Tuesday morning by Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa.

Mustafa says import duty will be cut on diesel used by fishing boats and for production of electricity to the public. He said the cut will ease the expenses of local fishermen and bring down the cost of electricity.

It requires a formal request to the Maldives Customs Service.

The legislature will come to effect the moment it is passed by the Parliament, ratified by the President and published on the Government Gazette.

Cutting import duty on diesel and reducing the cost of electricity is part of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s First 100-Day Agenda.
