Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir has submitted amendments to Political Parties Act which will allow the State to deduct outstanding debts owed by political parties from the money issued to parties by the State.

Amir said he had recommended the provisions when the Political Parties Act was first formed, but that the law was passed without adding the provisions.

He said adding the provisions will allow for justice.

“The amendment to Article 32 states procedure for when a party has a fine or outstanding debt. And amendment to Article 48 states procedure for when a political party is dissolved,” said Amir, adding that he has also recommended a new provision which will make political parties accountable in criminal cases.

Political Parties Act requires 0.1 percent of the State Budget be allocated to funds for political parties each year.

Amir said the general public should not be required to bear the burden of losses resulting from political conflicts.
