Cabinet Ministers have decided to give more power to the City Councils.

The President’s Office said that under the Local Government act, the cabinet re-assigned the powers and responsibilities of the City Councils at a cabinet meeting today.

The meeting today decided that the authority and services taken to the government from the Councils will be returned under separate agreements made with the Councils.

Responsibilities being returned to the councils include records keeping of births and deaths and statistics management. They would also be charged with waste management, park operations, enforcing regulations on restaurants, cafés and markets.
