Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his candidacy for the Central Machangolhi parliamentary seat and launched his campaign.

The announcement was made by MDP member Aishath Alaika Adnan during the campaign launch event held last Tuesday night.

The Central Machangolhi constituency is a newly declared electoral district.

Nasheed will first be contesting at the party primary.

The former President served at the Parliament from 1999 to 2001 when he was disqualified after he was found guilty of theft.

He was also MDP’s first choice for the presidential elections in 2018, but made the decision not to contest the election due to the 13-year sentence against him.

The sentence has since been overturned by the Supreme Court.
