Police investigate sexual assault of 13-year-old girl

Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Hulhumale’.

Media official from the MPS says the sexual assault case was filed with the authority on November 1.

MPS says the incident took place at approximately 11 pm on November 1, but has not confirmed whether it has arrested any suspects in connection with the case.

Local media has carried reports the 13-year-old girl was raped in the park under construction behind the mosque located in Neighborhood 1 of Hulhumale’.

The park is surrounded by a tin fence and is in complete darkness at night time with no lights.

The sexual assault comes amid complaints by locals over insufficient lighting in the neighborhood. Housing Development Corporation has provided assurance it will install more light fixtures in the streets.
