Speaker of Parliament should resign immediately: Gasim

The Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has called for the immediate resignation of the Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, following Shahid’s absence at the meeting held today at President’s Office to facilitate a stable setting to resume the presently suspended Parliament.

The meeting was held at 11:00, and attended by Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen and Parliamentary Group Leaders.

Gasim said that Shahid’s absence shows his lack of sincerity and called for his resignation.

“This shows that the Speaker of Parliament is not bothered by the Parliament being halted, which makes his sincerity questionable. I think he should resign immediately,” Gasim said.

He went on to say that he had no confidence in relation to Shahid’s sincerity even back when MDP proposed the no-confidence vote against Shahid at the Parliament.

“If he couldn’t make it, at least the Deputy Speaker should have attended today’s meeting,” Gasim said.

Gasim also asserted that JP will not participate in future meetings held to discuss Parliament disruptions.
