People living in L. Atoll are reporting experiencing a tremor this Wednesday morning.
A source from L. Fonadhoo who spoke to “Sun” said the tremor was felt in L. Fonadhoo, L. Gan and L. Kadhdhoo. He said the windows of homes shook from the tremor.
Some sources report the tremor was felt at approximately 11:30 am for about three seconds.
Maldives Meteorological Service confirmed it has received reports of the tremor. But said the seismic monitors show no record of a quake in the area.
Maldives Meteorological Service provide reassurance the tremor will not likely cause a rise in sea level. It said the Maldives is not an earthquake zone as it is not near any tectonic plate.
“Earthquakes are felt in areas which lay near tectonic plates. Maldives is not situated in such a region,” said the official from Maldives Meteorological Service who spoke to “Sun”.
Islands in Lh. Atoll reported experiencing a tremor on May 22 in a similar incident. Seismic monitors showed no record of an earthquake in the region either.
