Boat carrying cargo for Eid wrecks on reef

A boat carrying cargo from Male’ City to Dh. Meedhoo for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr has wrecked on a reef.

The fishing boat ‘Galaxy’ was carrying cargo when it wrecked on a reef 1.5 nautical miles to the South East of K. Ithaafushi.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said the incident was reported to the authority at 4:15 am this Wednesday.

MNDF said a MNDF Male’ Area Coastguard Squadron speedboat with a team of divers was immediately dispatched to the area.

The authority said the hull of the boat has been damaged in the incident, and that the boat is taking in water.

An additional boat has been sent to the area by the owner of ‘Galaxy’ to offload the cargo on board the boat.

There were six people onboard when the boat wrecked on the reef; two Maldivians and four foreigners.

MNDF reports no one was harmed in the incident.
