Implementation plans for Grouper Fisheries formalised by Cabinet

The Cabinet has formalized its decision to impose the enactment of sustainable Grouper Fisheries in the Maldives, and monitor the fishing practices part of its Sustainability Plan.

The President’s Office has reported that this decision was reached today, following a round of discussion on a paper presented by the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture.

The Sustainability Plan aims to establish the fishing of Groupers as a natural, eco-friendly practice and guarantee its numerous long-term commercial and financial benefits to local fishermen, export agencies and the Maldivian economy. In addition, the Plan outlines the regulations with regard to the minimum fixed limit of weight and size of Groupers allowed to fish and the geographical locations of local waters from where it is permissible to extract this fish.

A decision was also made to monitor changes in the population of Grouper Fish brought as a result of the enforcement of these regulatory strategies.
