10 people were arrested from the opposition’s demonstration in Male’ City last Wednesday night, says Maldives Police Service.
MPS issued a statement this Thursday morning, which said nine of the ten people were arrested for obstruction of justice, and one for pouring crude oil over a police officer.
Key political figures arrested from Wednesday night’s protest includes North Machangolhi MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain, Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and former Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam.
MPS said in the statement it will not allow for loss of peace and security within the community and the overthrow of the country’s legitimate government.
“The police appeal to the public not to participate in illegal political acts. Or any illegal act perpetrated for personal gain of politicians,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, the opposition has announced a mass demonstration will be held in Male’ City on Friday, March 16.
The Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said in a press conference on Wednesday that the demonstration is planned to stage a coup, and that the authorities will not allow for the demonstration to take place.
