Shareef appointed President of Elections Commission

The newly appointed member to Elections Commission (EC), former Managing Director at Fenaka Corporation Ahmed Shareef has been appointed the President of the commission.

The announcement was made by EC during a press conference held at the Elections Center this Tuesday afternoon.

Shareef took his oath of office in front of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in a function held at President’s Office this Tuesday, moments after the People’s Majlis provided its approval for Shareef.

33 lawmakers voted in approval of Shareef, and one lawmaker voted against – Thulhaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad – in a People’s Majlis sitting boycotted by opposition lawmakers.

Shareef most recently served as MD at Fenaka Corporation. He previously served as Secretary-General of EC. And also served in the People’s Majlis as MP for Thimarafushi constituency after winning a by-election during the last parliamentary term, but lost at re-elections in 2014.
