The court order issued by Supreme Court on Thursday regarding the policy for removal of MPs who switch political parties is very clear, the MPs who Elections Commissions declared as deposed no longer have any barrier to attending People’s Majlis sittings, says Secretary-General at People’s Majlis, Ahmed Mohamed.
In response to a question by “Sun”, Ahmed Mohamed said the 12 MPs who EC declared earlier as deposed can now attend Majlis sittings.
“There’s no barrier to the 12 MPs attending any future Majlis sittings. The Majlis will comply with the court order,” said Ahmed. “Majlis sitting was cancelled for security reasons. We are sending messages to all MPs.”
The first Majlis sitting of the year where President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was due to deliver his presidential address was scheduled for coming Monday. The Majlis sittings has now been cancelled for security reasons.
Ahmed Mohamed said a future date to hold the sitting will be announced later.
Supreme Court issued a court order overturning the EC’s declaration that 12 MPs effectively lost their seats for switching political parties on Thursday night.
