Vice President of PPM, Abdul-Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), has said that he does not understand why the opposition coalition is going to court to impeach President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom if they have such a massive support from the public.
Talking on the state media today, Abdul-Raheem said that the President cannot be impeached through the Supreme Court and the opposition actions does not make sense.
He said that the presidential impeachment procedure is clearly stated on Article 100 of the Constitution. Abdul-Raheem said that it is not something that can be done by two people or so working together and the people who filed the case at the Supreme Court are well aware of it.
According to the PPM Vice President, the opposition is having trouble digesting the development brought to the country by President Yameen and knows that President Yameen cannot be beaten in the presidential election.
According to Article 100 of the Maldivian Constitution, the President or the Vice President can be impeached through the parliament with 66 percent of the vote.
Last May, the Supreme Court said that they would be making the final decisions on the no-confidence votes taken at the parliament.
And so they would have the final decision on impeachments of Presidents, Vice Presidents, Court Judges and members of independent institutes.
