Four leaders of the opposition coalition has made a request at the Supreme Court to impeach President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
In a tweet sent out by the former President, Mohamed Nasheed, earlier today, he said that a case of corruption and theft has been filed against President Yameen at the Supreme Court by the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Jumhooree Party Leader, Qasim Ibrahim, Vice President of Adhaalath Party, Ali Zahir and himself.
The ex-President said that they have requested that President Yameen be impeached from office.
According to Article 100 of the Maldivian Constitution, the President or the Vice President can be impeached through the parliament with 66 percent of the vote.
Last May, the Supreme Court said that they would be making the final decisions on the no-confidence votes taken at the parliament.
And so they would have the final decision on impeachments of Presidents, Vice Presidents, Court Judges and members of independent institutes.
