There is no conflict within the Maldives Police Service, says Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan.
In a statement to media this Sunday, Shifan said the MPS was being run under the command and full control of Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Areef.
The statement comes amid reports in the local media that CP Areef refused to arrest Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon and that he has been relieved of his duties.
Shifan asked in the statement refrain from spreading misinformation regarding CP Areef and his duties.
“CP Areef is in post with full authority. All operations of Police Service are being conducted under his legal command,” said Shifan.
Shifan also wrote in the statement that all major investigations by the police was conducted by special teams, and that MP Faris’ investigation was being conducted by a special team as well, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudhy and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed.
The heightened political tension and reports of conflict within the police force comes a mere week after Spokesperson Shifan’s assurance the biggest priority for the police this year is to maintain security in the country.
Shifan said in an exclusive interview to “Sun” on January 21 that that the authority forecasts heightened tensions leading up to the Presidential Election this year.
“We will do everything necessary to maintain security within the community,” said Shifan, in the interview.
