The former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and his political party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are champions of corruption, says Minister of Environment Toriq Ibrahim.
Toriq made the comment at the inauguration of the USAID-funded drinking water supply system in Lh. Hinnavaru this Monday morning.
The minister said many attempted to cast Nasheed and MDP as champions of various causes, but that in reality, both Nasheed and MDP were champions of nothing but corruption.
“There’s thins talk of champions. That President Nasheed and MDP administration are champions of various things. But I say, the MDP administration and President Nasheed are champions of corruption,” said Toriq.
He said that he bestowed the award for champion of corruption to President Nasheed and MDP.
Toriq said the first decision by the MDP administration after it won office in 2008 had been to sell off shares from Dhiraagu. And then shares of Maldives Water and Sewerage Service (MWSC), followed by the Maldivian national airport.
He alleged the MDP administration sold off the shares and the airports below market value as gifts for those who helped them come to power. He said they were all acts of corruption.
