Torrential rain causes flooding in G. A. Vilingili

The torrential rain currently affecting the southern part of Maldives has resulted in flooding in G. A. Vilingili.

President of Vilingili Council, Mustafa Mohamed spoke to “Sun” about the flooding in an interview this Monday.

Mustafa said it wasn’t raining at the moment, but that flood water was still trapped inside some of the houses, resulting in minor damages.

He said the biggest issue facing the island at the moment was sewage waste overflowing from the junctions onto the streets.

“Flood water with sewage waste has reached inside homes. The pump system is completely damaged. The sewerage system is damaged. I have informed senior officials. I called an official even today. But no response. He said in a text they were looking into it,” said Mustafa.

He said the locals were trying to drain the flood water from the island.

“I also informed the MNDF. But they are in Thinadhoo. So I told them I’ll inform them if the situation gets serious,” said Mustafa.

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert to the central and southern atolls of the country.
