The self-exiled former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has met with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickramasinghe and discussed the political state in the Maldives.
After being sentenced to 13 years in prison for ordering the unlawful arrest of then Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed, President Nasheed left the country in the guise of medical treatment to UK and sought political asylum. Since then, he has been meeting with foreign leaders in Sri Lanka.
It is unclear when President Nasheed arrived in Sri Lanka for this meeting. But the Spokesperson of the joint opposition coalition, the MP for south Galolhu constituency, Ahmed Mahloof tweeted on Sunday that Nasheed has arrived in Sri Lanka for an important "mission".
But he did not say as to what that mission was.
Following his meeting with PM Wickramasighe, Nasheed tweeted that they discussed the need for fair elections in the Maldives.
