Mayor Shifa: Tweeted about bribe to create awareness

Male' City Mayor, Shifa Mohamed, has said that she tweeted about bribes to create awareness among the public.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has recently questioned Mayor Shifa regarding an offer to switch political parties in exchange for a three room apartment and millions in Maldivian Rufiyaa.

After their investigation, ACC said that when questioned about the bribe, she responded admitting to sending out a tweet declaring that she has been offered as such on 18 October 2017. ACC said that the Mayor has not been questioned by any journalist regarding the bribe nor is aware of any publication of the bribe in the news according to her.

In her statement to the ACC, Mayor Shifa said that she sent out the tweet because she believes such bribes are taking place in the society and wants to create public awareness. The Mayor said that it was part of a novel she is writing and the second part will be published in the future.

Mayor Shifa said that her tweet does not implicate any political figures or parties and was intended to create awareness.

With no indication of corruption in the matter, the ACC has ruled that no corruption was involved in the matter thus excluding the event from their mandate.
