Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) has suspended attorney-at-law Ahmed Shan.
DJA announced this Sunday that Shan has been charged by the State for carrying out sexual acts outside of marriage. He has been suspended pending outcome of the case.
The suspension means he will not be allowed to practice law at courts or tribunals.
Shan was arrested on October 8 from a guesthouse at G. Dh. Thinadhoo. Shan had a woman with him at his room at the guesthouse when the police raided the building. He has since been released.
Shan’s attorney, Shazeem Waheed said in an earlier statement that Shan had been in the bathroom of his room at the guesthouse, getting ready to go to Kaadedhdhoo Airport when the police came. He said the door of the room was opened for the police by the woman. He claims the woman was placed in the room to frame Shan.
The attorney also said police entered the guesthouse room without a warrant – which is a violation of Article 31 of Criminal Procedure Court.
The attorney said the woman was previously arrested by G. Dh. Thinadhoo Police Station in a similar case, but was released the same night.
