Storms damage Sosun Villa, Maldivian homes at Lanka

The storms currently affecting Sri Lanka have caused extensive damage to Sosun Villa in Colombo and Maldivian residences in the country.

Maldivian ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) said the storms have caused varying degrees of damage to Maldivian residences, and that some Maldivian families were living without electricity.

“From last night onwards, many homes in Colombo had the roofs blown off and power cut off. This includes homes inhabited by Maldivians,” said Mundhu, speaking to “Sun” this Thursday.

The storms have so far left four dead, 23 missing and scores more injured in the country.

Mundhu says the Maldivian embassy has not received reports of any injury to a Maldivian.

Sousun Villa – a service and recreational center for Maldivians in Sri Lanka – has also been damaged due to the bad weather.

“Since Sosun Villa is very open, a number of items on the property have been damaged. This includes some sporting equipment,” said Mundhu.

Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka forecasts heavy rain and strong winds to prevail for the next couple of days. Red alert was issued to the country on Wednesday.
