Cargo boat en route to Taj Coral Reef Resort capsizes

A boat, travelling from Male’ City to Taj Coral Reef Resort in K. Atoll with cargo has capsized.

Maldives National Defense Force said the incident was reported to the authority at approximately 10:10 am this Thursday.

The boat “Zorro” was travelling with two Bangladesh and one Maldivian crewmember when it capsized. All three were rescued by a speedboat from Taj Coral Reef Resort and taken to the resort minutes after.

MNDF said the boat capsized after running aground a sandbank near the resort as it struggled with the bad weather currently facing the country. MNDF said it wasn’t likely the authority would be able to save either the boat or the cargo due to the bad weather.

The authority has advised against sea travel unless absolutely necessary.
