EU delegates to visit on Monday to assess political situation in Maldives

A delegation from European Union (EU) are scheduled to arrive in Maldives the coming Monday to conduct an assessment of the current political situation in the country.

EU reports the delegation is made up of four members from the European Parliament, and that they will be staying in Maldives for two days.

The delegation is set to meet members of the opposition and discuss the current political situation and the upcoming presidential election, says EU.

The European Parliament recently passed a motion for action against Maldives for breach of human rights, democracy and rule of law in the country.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives has rejected the motion, stating the government need not abide by every motion that is passed.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not immediately available for comment regarding the delegation’s visit.
