Tenants were evicted from a housing unit in Bandeyri Koshi II last Friday as per regulation, says Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
Information officer at MNDF, Captain Ibrahim Azim reported to “Sun” this Saturday that the authority asked the police to evict tenants from the housing unit as per regulation. He, however, made no comment when “Sun” asked about the specifics of the regulation.
Housing units in Bandeyri Koshi houses MNDF officers and their families. “Sun” has been informed that the unit which was vacated was issued to a retired MNDF officer while he had been in service.
A member of the family which lived in the unit reported to “Sun” that the High Court had ruled they cannot be evicted without any compensation. He said the family had showed the MNDF and police officers who came to evict them the High Court order, and asked them whether they had any court order overruling the High Court order.
The officers failed to show any such court order, said the tenant.
“The High Court order says we cannot be evicted without compensation. We were forcefully evicted despite the standing High court order and lack of any other court order approving eviction,” he said.
The tenant said the High Court had ordered the housing unit to be valued and the tenants given financial compensation based on the value before they are evicted.
