5.9 percent increase in tourist in Maldives

Tourism Ministry has announced that the number of tourists that visited the Maldives this August was 5.9 percent higher compared to the August of 2016.

Statistics from the Ministry show 842,635 tourists visiting the Maldives last August and 892,025 tourists visiting the country in the same time period this year.

Compared to July 2017, the number of tourists that visited the country in August went up by 7.1 percent.

The highest number of tourists visited the country, 46 percent, from Europe this year so far. In August alone, 49 percent of the tourists came from the Asia Pacific region. Of which 27.8 percent are from China.

The statistics from the Ministry also show the number of beds in 129 resorts, 428 guesthouses, 14 hotels and 146 safari yachts at 39,040 at the end of August.

Maldives are pursuing a number of avenues to develop the tourism industry in the country even further. And so the Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, Kobkarn Suriyasat Wattanavrangkul, arrived in the Maldives yesterday and held discussions with the Maldivian government.
