Haleem

The case of the murder of Police Lance Corporal Adam Haleem has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, following a confession to the crime by Mohamed Samah, 22, of Suvasa, K. Kaashidhoo.

Inspector of Police Mohamed Daood said today that investigations had revealed that Samah stabbed Haleem when Haleem attempted to take Samah to Police custody subsequent to seeing him on the street while he was on house arrest.

Daood said that Haleem first reported to the Police that Samah was on the street. He then told Samah to prepare to go to the Police Station, and waited for Samah outside his house.

Samah was screaming at Haleem, and went into the kitchen, took an eight-inch knife and stabbed Haleem.

Daood said that the people in the house knew of the incident only when they heard a scream.

By the time the Police jeep arrived at the scene following Haleem’s phone call, Haleem was lying on the ground.

Haleem lost a lot of blood as he was taken on the jeep and taken to the Health Centre, and died at 00:10 that night.

Samah tested positive for cannabis and was inebriated when he attacked Haleem.

No other person is known to have participated in Haleem’s murder.

Police had completed an assault investigation involving Samah and transferred him to house arrest on 22 July.

“There was no communication between Samah and Haleem, other than Haleem asking him to prepare to go to Kaashidhoo Police Station,” Daood said.

He also noted that there is no evidence that the attack was motivated by politics; nonetheless, as the incident took place at a time when groups are inciting attacks against the Police, action will be taken against those responsible for those calls.

Police Lance Corporal Adam Haleem, who died after being stabbed while he was on his way to report for duty, has been awarded double promotion, President’s medal, and family member privileges.
