The Criminal Court has extended the detention period to ten days, of former Minister of State for Home Affairs and member of MDP Appeal Court Judges Council, Mohamed Mahir Eesa, who was arrested last night following a Court order.
A Police Media Official informs that Mahir was arrested at around 20:25 last night under accusations of encouraging violence against the Police.
Mahir, in his speech made at MDP camp area Usfasgandu on 12 July, called and encouraged the crowd to attack and participate in violent activities against the security forces.
A video played by the Police at a press conference yesterday shows Mahir asking the crowd to use whatever weapons they can get their hands on, to attack the people who had conducted the ‘coup’.
He further says that the religion also encourages us to fight traitors until they fall to the ground.
MDP has today issued a statement calling for Mahir’s release. The statement says that Mahir was arrested for exercising his right to freedom of expression, and that this is a violation of the Constitution by the Police.
