Medianet sues Broadcasting Commission over fine

Local cable service provider, Medianet has filed a lawsuit against Maldives Broadcasting Commission after the commission fined the company MVR 500,000 for re-broadcasting the Al-Jazeera documentary, Stealing Paradise.

The case has been scheduled for 11:30 pm at Civil Court this Monday.

An official from Medianet who spoke to “Sun” said the company had no comment regarding the case at the moment.

“We don’t want to make any statement regarding the issue at the moment,” said the official.

Maldives Broadcasting Commission likened broadcasting the Stealing Paradise documentary to broadcasting content which threatened national security.

Medianet was asked to pay the fine and issue a statement apologizing for rebroadcasting the documentary.

Stealing Paradise alleged corruption within the highest level of the current administration.

The Maldivian government issued a statement refuting the allegations against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom after the documentary was aired.
