About 300 officers are trying to sustain

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the government was overthrown in February 2012 by about 300 Police and MNDF officers, and that the same officers are now trying to sustain the ‘coup’.

Nasheed made this statement at a ceremony held to launch a report by three Danish authors and a book by Ali Moosa Didi of H. Navaagan, on the transfer of power.

“About 300 Police and MNDF officers are directly responsible for the loss of peace and order all over the country. The efforts to sustain the coup are carried out under the supervision of the same 300 officers,” Nasheed said.

He said that excessive force is being used every day in order to sustain the ‘coup’.

He stressed that MDP is not desperate, and said that the party’s most prominent attribute is that it will never back down.

“We can hold discussions or go to court, to facilitate the election which will end the coup. But MDP’s view is that the best way to end the coup is by holding Direct Action protests,” Nasheed said.

The report entitled ‘Rested Democracy’ by authors Associate Professor Anders Henriksen, lawyer Kieffer Kristensen, and Jonas Parello Plesner, highlights that Nasheed resigned under duress.

It also states that the security forces have violated human rights over the past six months, and that the current regime should be held accountable for these practices.
